Vanessa Soft (29) is the only teacher at Fairhaven's only school. As Otto's wife, she's the First Lady of Fairhaven, a position suited to her polished, sophisticated persona.

Life Before Fairhaven

When Vanessa was a child, her family used to spend summers in Fairhaven. She developed a strong love for the island that persists to this day.

Note: When the game was initially released, players could only reach one heart with Bruno. This was later increased to three hearts in an update that extended the story beyond Year 1. As a result, only one cutscene will trigger during Year 1.

How to initiate cutscene: After gaining one full heart, find Vanessa at the southern part of the lake in the Woods on the weekend.

Dialogue:

Tara: Vanessa? Is that you?
Vanessa: Oh! Hello, Tara. I was just admiring the water. It looks shallow, but it’s surprisingly deep here. It makes for a lovely swimming hole.
Tara: Does Otto know that you go swimming in the lake that’s, uh, inside the woods he absolutely detests?
Vanessa: I haven’t swum here in years. But when I was a little girl, my family came here on vacation every summer. Those weeks were always the best part of the year. They were how I knew Fairhaven was special to me. You visited as well when you were a child… did you also have that sense?
--[Choice: Yes]
-Tara: Yes! Whenever my dad brought me to visit my grandmother, I didn’t want to go back.
-Vanessa: Neither did I! I wonder what our lives would have been like if we’d grown up here?
--[Choice: It was complicated]
-Tara: I always wanted to come back, but my dad and grandmother... well, I didn't even know why they were fighting.
-Vanessa: I understand. My parents pushed me very hard when I was a child. It took me a long time to understand why they did it. They just wanted me to succeed.
--[Choice: No]

Vanessa: In any case… I love Fairhaven, even the parts of it my husband doesn’t care for. Sometimes it’s hard for me to express that love. But I do feel it.
Tara: That’s really sweet, Vanessa.
Vanessa: Well, I mean it! Oh, and Tara? Don’t tell everyone about my spot. I like having space to just be.
