| Oh, hey! You're new here! I'm Sebastián, who are you?
Tara: I'm Tara, I just moved here to help out my Gramma Hazel. Do you know her? Sebastián: Oh yeah! Hazel's cool, like, for a grown up. I'll see ya around! |
| Hazel is a dope old lady! You're lucky, having a gramma like that.
Tara: What, not a fan of your own grandparents? Sebastián: My mom's parents died when I was little, and my dad's parents can't visit much 'cuz of visa problems. Tara: Oh… I'm sorry for bringing it up. Sebastián: It's cool. Hazel's the communal gramma. |
| Hey, how much do you remember about polynomial factorization?
Tara: Sebastián… I don't even remember what that is. Sebastián: Hah! That's what I told Mrs. Soft when she said I should pay more attention in algebra II! |
| I asked Violet if I should help out in her store and she got all offended. The store is like… her thing, I guess… Plus, she said I had to focus on school so I could get into a good college. But pro skateboarders don't need college degrees! |
| This morning, Violet saw my shirt, told me it looked bad, and made me put on another one. And actually… she was right. This one does look better. She's really good at that stuff. I wish she could sell clothes instead of flowers. But she said "Shirts don't grow on bushes, and flowers do." |
| A few years ago, Mrs. Soft tried this 'exchange' program where we went to a Milkwater school every Friday. But the people there said I talked funny. They're the ones that talk funny! Where do all their 'r's go? So… yeah. We don't do that program anymore. |
| So what was the wildest thing you ever saw in the city?
Tara: Uh… I saw a rat drag a piece of pizza into a storm drain once? Sebastián: That's… not really what I was imagining. |
| I want to go out surfing, but Kai says I need a wetsuit. Where am I supposed to find a wetsuit around here? See! This is why I want to move to the city! |
| Most of the time, I don't mind the twins. But they have like an energy level of… an entire busload of kids. It would be cool if they could bring it down a notch, you know? |
| You came here from the city? That's where I'm going the minute I turn 18. I can't wait. |
| Hey, if you have any extra wood lying around, I'll take it off your hands. I'm building a wicked skate ramp! |
| Bruno's told me all these sick stories about the mines. How killer would it be for me to take my skateboard down there? With the right video, I could go viral! Doing tricks off stalactites… stalagmites… you know, the ones on the ground! |
| Have you met my sister yet? Purple hair, sells flowers… … Acts like she's the boss of me when she SO isn't! |
| Have you met Kai yet? He travels off-island to get stuff for his kiosk and goes surfing up and down the coast. He's totally living my dream life! |
| Summer |
|---|
| Hey, this might be like weird or whatever, but Juliet and I are part of a grief group. It's for kids, but you could come if you want, I don't think anyone would care. |
| No school means playing all the video games I didn't have time for during the school year!Violet says I have to be careful though, or I'll rot my brain. But video games can be good for you! I can't believe she doesn't know that. |
| Dad used to get nervous before every Summer Festival because he had to make a speech. And he hates giving speeches.
Tara: Then why did he run for mayor…? Sebastián: He just really loves Fairhaven. Sucks that he had to leave. Violet yelled and said he didn't need to take a job somewhere else, but... he did the right thing. |
| Marty got a degree in raising animals, but he never actually raised any! College doesn't make any sense! |
| I didn't know you could be a scientist and still run around on mountaintops and wear cool jewelry. Maybe I can be a pro skateboarder and a scientist?
Tara: Sebastián… that would be incredible. |
| I thought I was done with physics forever after school got out. But then I was reading this guide to building structurally sound skate ramps, and it busted out words like velocity, and friction, and projectile motion… Man, physics is freaking haunting me! |
| Violet hates Cameron, but I can't figure out why. Yeah, he never shuts up about the Consciousness Center… but we all get too enthusiastic about something. And the Consciousness Center is way better than the boring old church that used to be here! |
| Tyooooo, the onsen is sick. I can't believe you and Kim made this happen! It's so relaxing, I could just fall asleep. But I'm not supposed to sleep in there. But for real, if I did, would anyone notice…? |
| Tara: Having a good day, Sebastián?
Sebastián: Ah-choo! Ugh, my sister made me help her haul over all the sunflowers this morning! I'm going to be sneezing all day! |
| Every year I get less hyped for the Summer Festival. I'd like it more if I didn't have to hang out with Juliet and the twins. Not that there's anything wrong with them! They're just… younger. |
| Back to school soon. Uggghhh. I barely made it through algebra II. This year it's trigonometry. I'm gonna fall asleep, and trust me, that's hard to miss when the class sizes are so small. |
| Fall |
|---|
| Back to the grind.
Tara: What, school? Sebastián: No, I'm learning how to grind down ramps on my skateboard! I keep rolling off the edge instead, though. |
| Violet will not shut up about the flowers for Angus and Francis's wedding. But like, aren't they having the wedding outside? Why do they need more flowers? |
| Otto shouldn't be mayor. He only lucked into it last time because my dad decided not to run for re-election. I still don't know why he did that. He was a great mayor! At least I thought so. |
| I've been thinking lately - Mom left us right after Dad decided not to run for mayor again. Do you think that might be why? Maybe she just didn't want to live here if she couldn't be first lady anymore.
Tara: I'm sure that's not why, Sebastián. Sebastián: Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me, either. |
| Tara: How's school, Sebastián?
Sebastián: It's weird. I graduate this year, did you know that? I've wanted to get off this island for so long… But now I'm not really sure where I'll go. |
| Not that I can vote, but if I could, I would vote for Marty. At least he wants to make this place like, an actually interesting place to live. |
| I'm so glad the wedding is over. My sister's been a total stressball over the flowers. Maybe now she'll mellow out. Who and I kidding? Violet doesn't really "do" mellow. |
| Angus and Francis seem really happy. But my Mom and Dad did too, before she left. I don't know why I said that. I just hope they have better luck, I guess. |
| I can't believe anyone would think Mrs. Moretti is a witch. She's the nicest person in Fairhaven! After my mom took off and my Dad got his job off-island, she brought us dinner casseroles like every night. I finally started going to her diner just to save her the trip. |
| Well, I'm not surprised everyone picked Mayor Soft again.
Tara: Hey, not everyone picked him. Sebastián: Yeah, well. Nothing is ever really going to change around here. |
| This neighborhood watch thing is weird. I thought the whole point of being a grown-up is that no one can give you a curfew anymore. I'm definitely not sticking around once I'm old enough to leave this place. |
| I wanted to go to the trial, but I had to babysit the twins. You don't get a ton of chances to go to an actual witch trial, you know? |
| Well, I'm relieved. But I still think it's nuts that anyone would think Mrs. Moretti is a witch! |
| Winter |
|---|
| Violet looks tired all the time now. Actually, you do, too.
Tara: Gee, thanks, Sebastián. Sebastián: I have an idea! I'll make our dish for the Winter Feast. Except I'm like, not a good cook. Tara: I bet Violet would appreciate the help no matter what you make. |
| Tara: Hey Sebastián. How's it going?
Sebastián: Fine. Just been hanging with Juliet, you know, making sure she's okay. |
| Violet's giving me grief because I want to make boxed mac n' cheese for the Winter Feast.
Tara: Why? Boxed mac n' cheese is delicious! Sebastián: I know! Besides, after what they put Mrs. Moretti through, this town doesn't deserve any more effort than that. I'm sorry but I'm not sorry. |
| It's a shame you're gonna miss out on all the tastiness Mrs. Moretty usually brings to the Winter Feast. She usually makes this dope veggie lasagna… But not this year, I guess. |
| Juliet invited me to come join her and her mom for the first night of Hanukkah. It was nice, if a little sad. I know she misses her dad. |
| I don't care if they never fix the ferry. I'll swim to Milkwater if that's what it takes to leave this place….. Maybe when it's warmer though. |
| You won't believe it! Parker drew me in the gift exchange and he made me a funbox! I can finally practice my 360s on a ramp! |
| Don't tell my sister, but I really wish she didn't insist on recreating Mom's holiday recipes every year. She tries but… blegh. |
| I hope Kai doesn't think I'm a wimp, but no way am I getting in the water right now! |
| Violet's been dealing with a lot lately, so I told her I'd handle the Winter Feast for us. I made boxed mac, which is the best food I know! But she's acting mad at me. |
| Hold up - first Marty runs against Mayor Soft, and now he's accused of witchcraft? I'm not the only one who finds that kind of suspicious, am I? |
| I don't get it. Angus always seemed pretty chill. I mean, not about his cakes and stuff, but you know, other than that. |
| Tricks in the rain I can do. Tricks in the snow are just not gonna happen. |
| I bet Winter in the city isn't so bad. There's like, actual stuff to do there, right? |
| Now they think Giva is a witch? She's so nice and was super patient explaining to me how all the cool tech in her lab works! I'm getting off this island, man. And I'm taking Violet with me. What if she's next? |
| Epilogue |
|---|
| Hey… thank you. For, you know, helping bring my mom back. I, um, don't know what else to say.
Tara: I don't either! I have no relevant experience in this! Sebastián: It's just like… hard to come up with words when your whole life changes. |
| Mom didn't even know I was into skateboarding! I've been showing her all the stunts I can do. She gets so hype even when I do basic tricks. It… it makes me really happy. |
| I get my old bedroom back in the mayor's mansion! Vanessa had it filled with a treadmill and a stationary bike. Guess who owns that stuff now? Me! |
| I can't wait until my dad comes to visit! He and my mom have been video-chatting a lot. Is it weird to say my parents are mad cute? |
| Giva - I mean Ms. Joshi - held a picnic for us! She even let me bring my skateboard. Maybe I'll start looking forward to school now. |
| I can't believe I'm saying this, but I haven't gone on the ferry since it was fixed. For once, I'm fine staying here. |
