Lina Dahl-Johnson (40) runs the general store, Dahl General Store alongside her husband, Parker. She's also the mother of twins Emmi and Finn.

She is dependable and professional, but sometimes feels like the responsibilities of running the family business have left her with little time for anything else.

Lina is the High Priestess of the Fairhaven coven, a responsibility she takes very seriously. She's studied magic ever since she was a child, and her father's guidance, mixed with her steady determination to be the best, has made her one of the most capable witches Fairhaven has ever seen.

Life Before Fairhaven

Lina used to babysit Tara when she was little. Her family has lived in Fairhaven for hundreds of years. Her father once ran the general store, but now he lives in a retirement home in Milkwater.

See, that right there was the response I was worried about. Lina: Part of the reason I haven’t wanted to change things is so my dad won’t be disoriented if he comes back to Fairhaven. It’s good to see you again! Lina: I heard you were coming to stay with your Grandma Hazel. Now, do you remember the way? Tara: Err… no, I don’t remember much from that time! Lina: No problem! Go up the stairs behind me and turn left at the top. Then just follow your nose till you get to Hazel’s house! Tara: Go up the stairs behind you then turn left and follow the path. Got it!

Tara: So how are your parents? Oh, um… I'm realizing I don't know their names. I always called them Mr. and Mrs. Dahl! Lina: It's all right! You could call my dad Markus now… if he still lived here. He's in a retirement home in Milkwater. And Lisa - that's my ma - passed eight years ago. Tara: I'm really sorry to hear that. Lina: It's okay. All in the past, right?
Tara: I can't believe you're married now! In my head, you're still sixteen. Lina: Believe me, I wonder every day about where the time's gone! If you have questions about the buildings on your farm, don't hesitate to ask Parker. He's the sweetest guy. I couldn't have asked for better.
Lina: I'm so glad Hazel has company again. At her age - well, I worried about her living alone.
Tara: So… did your babysitting experience prepare you for twins? Lina: Oh, Tara. Nothing prepares you for twins. At least they're not toddlers any more! They don't try to put everything that's not nailed down in their mouths.
Lina: Thank goodness I was born here and Otto can't make me introduce myself to everyone! Who has the time?
Tara: Hey, Lina! At the till again? Lina: Well… I have to be. Since my dad retired a few years ago, it's just me running this place. Parker helps when he can, but he has his workshop. Sometimes I pay Sebastián to help me restock the shelves if he wants new grip tape for his skateboard. But otherwise, it's all me.
Tara: I remember that you were really into the speech and debate club when you were in high school. You used to practice your talking points on me when you babysat. Lina: Oh, I remember that, too! I thought about going to law school… But that would mean leaving Fairhaven for too long. And I just can't be separated from this place!
Lina: If only Dad could see the work you're putting in on Hazel's farm! He and Thomas used to help her with the harvests after your grandfather passed away. She'd always tell them she didn't need any help, but they wouldn't take no for an answer.
Tara: Have you ever lived anywhere other than Fairhaven? Lina: Not for very long. I did commute back and forth to the city for a year, though! I was taking a business management class. The city wasn't for me, but it did give me a chance to meet Parker. So I'm grateful to it for that.
Lina: Parker's so supportive of me, so I try to support him too. But out of all the hobbies he could've taken up… he had to pick the League of the Conscious Mind? Tara: What, you don't like it? Lina: It's not that, It's just… I don't trust people who tell you that you're the only obstacle between yourself and true happiness.
Lina: I hope you're enjoying the sunshine! I wish I could be out there with you. I used to love getting up early to practice tai chi on days like this! But now I don't have the time. Or the energy.
Lina: Thomas' sister keeps setting him up on dates, but none of them seem to work out. Which is disappointing. For him, I'm sure, but… also for me. I've told him a few times that our relationship ended in high school, and there's not going to be a second act. I'm married. I'm just not sure how much he hears me on that.
Lina: Remember when we used to run a lemonade stand in town and then spend our earnings on ice cream? Tara: Yes! Whatever happened to that old ice cream parlor? Lina: Oh, the owner retired ages ago. Truth is, it's hard to run a business year-round here.
Lina: This shop has been in my family for five generations! Well… maybe longer if you count my ancestor Helga Dahl's shop that stood on this spot… It burned down in the Great Fairhaven Fire of 1817. Tara: Oh no! That sounds terrible. Was Helga okay? Lina: Oh yes! She was acquitted. Tara: That's not what I... Lina: The constable thought she started it, but he had no proof, did he?
Lina: It's a shame Hazel gave up raising chickens. I miss having those farm-fresh eggs every morning!
Lina: You know the statue of the two girls in the town square? Tara: Yes, I was wondering about it. Lina: They're my ancestors. Molly and Peggy Dahl. They were heroes in the Revolutionary War. My family has a lot of history on the island. It's a blessing, but... It can be a lot to live up to sometimes.
Lina: You'll find that this is a special place. We've all got to work together to take care of it.

Summer Year 1
Lina: I'm grateful that Hazel was still her same firey self right until the end. My father isn't so fortunate. Oh, Tara I'm so sorry, how stupid of me. I can't imagine how you must feel. Tara: It's okay. Lina: I'll miss her. She was a wonderful mentor. And a steadfast friend.
Lina: You are a lifesaver. Now the twins have something to occupy themselves with outside of school. Except… Emmi keeps asking me about stock options. And Finn keeps asking what would happen if you put ketchup in lemonade.
Lina: It's hard to express how much I'll miss Hazel. She's been a guiding hand my whole life. But I'm glad that she and Robert are together again on the other side.
Lina: Did Hazel ever tell you that she met Robert at the Summer Festival? The teenagers used to challenge each other to jump over the bonfire, you see. Robert waited until it was stacked really high, and then he took the biggest leap! Tara: And he cleared it? Lina: No! His pants caught fire, and Hazel dumped her lemonade on him to put it out. It was the beginning of a great love story!
Tara: Lina, the teenagers don't still jump over the bonfire at the Summer festival, do they? Lina: No! I mean, Sebastián keeps threatening to build a skate ramp and do a flying trick over it… But I'm pretty sure Violet would confiscate his skateboard before he could.
Lina: You sure have been keeping Parker busy! Tara: Oh, I'm sorry… Lina: Oh, no, I don't mind! He loves restoring all the little details on old houses. If it was up to him we'd go off island to hit up antique markets every weekend!
Lina: This year, I had to set a s'more limit for the kids. Last Summer Finn fashioned a 3-pronged marshmallow roasting stick out of some branches and twine… Tara: He's an efficient engineer. I like it. Lina: That kid is really too much like his dad sometimes.
Lina: It seems we have a new neighbor! I saw Cameron on his way to visit her. Hoping to convert a new acolyte, I presume. I'm sorry. That wasn't very nice of me. I'm sure he was just being neighborly.
Lina: Thanks again for helping the kids with their stand. Of course, now Emmi's asking for a credit card so she can start building her credit…
Lina: Giva didn't seem to believe me when I said I thought our weather seemed normal to me. But I've lived here my whole life! I guess maybe I don't know what normal is like.
Lina: It's so hot the kids have even expressed an interest in joining Parker when he goes to the Consciousness Center. Cameron's got his AC blasting at all times, of course.
Lina: This heat has put everyone on edge. Maybe cooler temperatures will bring about cooler minds.
Tara: So, do you have any fun plans for the summer? Lina: Oh, it's our busiest season! I can't really go anywhere. I'll probably hop over on the ferry to visit my dad in Milkwater, though.
Lina: I really love running this shop, but I wish I could mix things up sometimes. Tara: There aren't more "general" things you can sell? Lina: If you grow anything I can sell here, I would be happy to buy it from you! Tara: Deal!
Tara: What a great tradition this is, Lina! Lina: Yes. I think my ancestors would be pleased that we haven't forgotten them.
Lina: You were such a charming Summertide Star. I hope you can forgive Sophia for putting you on the spot like that! I know Hazel would have been so proud of you.
Lina: I'm so ready for summer to be over! My kids need something to keep themselves busy!
Lina: Don't forget to stop by Parker's shop if you need anything for your farm! He can build you a chicken coop or a barn.
Tara: Have you ever seen a dry spell like this on the island before, Lina? Lina: A few years back we did, but that was the first time I can recall. Thomas even had to dig his well deeper. It's strange that it's happened again so soon.
Lina: Cameron actually asked me if my kids ever sneak out at night to play pranks. Like I don't know where my kids are! He really has a lot of nerve. My kids are tucked in safely every night. Well, I may have put a tracking charm on them. Just in case.
Lina: How are things going on the farm? I love having fresh summer produce in the shop! I have no idea how Hazel managed it but her vegetables were always the best.
Lina: The new rancher really picked an unlucky moment to move in! Animals need so much water. He's come by every day asking for more, but I only get so much from Milkwater and I've got to save some for the humans!
Lina: The break in is just the justification Otto has been looking for to create his Neighborhood Watch. Tara: I'm sorry!

Fall Year 1
Lina: I have to admit, I'm relieved that the kids are back in school. Since Parker and I both work, coordinating childcare during the Summer is a nightmare! I will miss their lemonade stand, though. It made them so happy.
Lina: I told Francis that he and Angus should just elope, like Parker and me. Tara: Wait, you eloped? Lina: My ma insisted we get married here, but Parker's mom wanted us to get married in the city. A courthouse wedding meant both mothers were equally furious-! At least, for a little bit.
Lina: I do wish that we had candidates who were a little bit… well… Tara: What? Lina: … to put it in mayor-speak, "more representative of our beautiful town's diversity."
Lina: We went to visit Dad in Milkwater recently. He couldn't remember my name, but he was so happy to see us! I'm going to count that as a success.
Lina: I overheard Vanessa say that she wished we had an organic grocery store on the island. And that would be nice, in theory! But doesn't she know that it would put me out of business? She probably doesn't even realize it. Never mind.
Lina: Hi Tara! Tara: Hi Lina! You seem to be in a good mood. Lina: I am! Fall is my favorite season in Fairhaven. The foliage, the pumpkin pie, the fact that my kids are back in school full time… Wait. I said the last part out loud, didn't I?
Lina: Emmi is so smart. But she knows stealing is wrong. She could have just asked Juliet if she could see the sheet music! Sometimes, my children baffle me.
Lina: This morning, I found Finn making a little shelter out of pieces of wood that Parker had left lying around. I asked him what it was for, and he said it was for animals that needed a break from the wind today. I may be biased, but is that not the sweetest thing you've ever heard?
Lina: Parker's been working so hard on his wedding gift for Francis and Angus. He always has been a hopeless romantic! I still don't know why he picked me, heh.
Lina: It was you and Damon, wasn't it? Tara: Hmm? Lina: You know. The chicken business. Tara: I, uh, am not authorized to tell you. But if it was us, would you be upset? Lina: Theoretically - theoretically - I would shake your hands.
Tara: So… witch trials. Do they happen a lot here? Lina: They do, unfortunately. But the last trials were a century ago. Someone accused one of my great-great-great-aunts of hexing some pickles. But she wasn't even a witch! She just didn't keep a very clean canning station. In her accuser's defense, botulism probably does feel like getting hexed.
Lina: I keep looking over at the diner so I can catch Sophia's eye. Give her a smile. Something. But her head is always down. It's like seeing a sunflower drooping on its stalk.
Lina: When we had to find a special-care place for my dad, I thought… "If something goes wrong on Fairhaven, we'll still have Hazel." And now… We have you, though! And I'm very grateful for that. Tara: Uh… I don't know if I measure up. But thanks.
Lina: Vanessa asked me to come in for a chat because Finn's reading skills are "not where they should be." How do I tell her that I just don't have time right now? Or that he reads perfectly fine at home?
Lina: Witch trials have happened in Fairhaven before. My da told me that the island has a long history of them. But this time feels different.
Lina: I've been slipping bags of candy into Sophia's groceries. But she's still so distraught, I don't think she's noticed.
Lina: You're working so hard to keep the wheel of our little world turning. Don't forget to pick up your groceries amidst all that. Here. (Gives 2 pumpkin)

Winter Year 1
Lina: I try to make an effort to check in with Sophia every day, since we work just across from each other. But I can see the question in her eyes: "Why didn't you defend me, Lina?" I wish I could make her understand.
Lina: It was kind of Kim to take over the Winter Feast preparations from Sophia. I know dealing with large groups of people is not exactly their favorite thing.
Lina: Going to the spa isn't really my thing. Who has that kind of free time? People without kids, maybe. But the onsen on a cold day? Ahhhh…. it's a perfect little escape.
Lina: The beginning of Spring will be such a relief… and maybe, a chance for a fresh start.
Lina: I've got enough goods in my storeroom to last for a couple of weeks, but after that… I can't restock if the ferry isn't running.
Tara: Are you going to run out of things to sell, Lina? Lina: Oh, I keep stores in the basement just in case there are regular ferry delays… I never thought it would go completely out of service, though.
Lina: Yesterday, I made a festive display out of ribbon and canned veggies. Then Emmi came tearing in here and knocked it down…
Lina: I tried your salmon. It's delicious! Just like Hazel used to make.
Lina: Parker can't stop talking about the greenhouse he built you. He's proud of his work, of course, but I think he's also hoping you'll grow some out-of-season flowers. He hates having to wait all year for sunflowers.
Lina: It's so strange to see Angus like this, and I know Francis is beside himself with worry. Tara: We'll make it right. We have to.
Lina: I think the kids may have each had too many sugar cookies at the feast. They were bouncing off the walls all night. Tara: How many did they have? Lina: Oh, just like one or two… dozen, maybe.
Tara: Have you talked to Francis since… you know? Lina: No. I think he's avoiding me. I understand what he must be feeling. It's a lot to take in.
Lina: Sigh. Tara: What's wrong, Lina? Lina: Oh, it's snowing. And snow means I get at least one complaint from a resident about my kids pelting them with snowballs. Usually Otto.
Lina: I keep trying to make time for date nights with Parker. But at the end of a long, chilly day, I just want to sit by the fireplace and read.
Lina: Parker is outraged. Malcontent or not, what Marty was trying to do here could have been very destructive. This place isn't just picturesque real estate. It's our home.
Lina: I have the most delicious lentil stew in the slow cooker at home. It's a Dahl family classic!
Lina: When my father's dementia came on suddenly, I had to step up. To protect the coven, and the town. But I can't even protect my family, Tara. Tara: Don't say that. We'll free Parker. We'll do whatever it takes. Lina: All these years, all the lying… was it even worth it, in the end?
Lina: I know Violet is going to want to track down every Echo Blossom in the Gloaming. But please focus on what we need for the incantation. This Winter can't go on much longer.
Lina: I've been trying to go to Sophia's diner even more than usual. She needs the support… and the kids love her cooking more than mine.
Tara: So Otto was meeting a strange woman in the woods… Lina: Yes, quite a nasty surprise for his wife, I suspect! She seems shaken. But then, I've been having secret meetings in the woods too that my spouse knew nothing about. I guess I'm the last one who can judge him.

Epilogue
Tara: Do you think anyone here will report what they've seen? Like… "I witnessed fairies in the town square"? Lina: I wouldn't be surprised if, say, Marty tried. But who would believe him? It was a very stressful Winter for him, after all. And besides, Fairhaven has managed to keep its secrets for hundreds of years.
Lina: Last Spring, Hazel was still with us. And I was still telling her that we couldn't afford to be honest with our neighbors. Hazel, if you're listening… I was wrong. I'll happily admit it!
Lina: My kids can be a bit of a handful, but they mean well. Most of the time.
Lina: Giva remembered how much the twins loved their lemonade stand. She's going to do a unit on basic economics using the lemonade stand as an example. Emmi is over the moon!
Lina: It is such a relief to walk by Town Hall and see Gloria there instead of Otto. Or even Antonio. Antonio was all right, but Gloria… she knows how to get things done.
Lina: Parker and I have been going on dates again. Actual dates! Not just collapsing on the couch and watching TV in silence after the kids are asleep!
